Waving The Flag For Volunteers – A new way to get noticed

This year the IW Volunteer Centre are pleased to announce a new project to celebrate and promote volunteering on the Isle of Wight.
Thanks to funding from Community Action IW and the Heritage Action Zones, we are able to offer free participation for community groups who have volunteers at the heart of their work. Shademakers UK, one of the leading Carnival Arts companies in Europe (who are based in Ryde), will be designing the overall entry, running workshops, providing materials and expertise and helping to bring it all together.

The IW Volunteer Centre would like to invite you to take part in this exciting new project. We want to make this as easy as possible for you to take part. Whether there are just two of you or 200 from your organisation who want to take part, we want you to sign up and wave a flag for your organisation and your volunteers.

We ask you to send between one and four people to at least two workshops and to sign up to at least two carnivals, if possible.

We really want to show what a diversity of organisations there are who have volunteer opportunities and celebrate the hard work of those involved.

Don’t be left out, Make sure you sign up soon!

Taking Part in the Carnivals

We understand that not every group will be able to send lots of volunteers to take part in all of the carnivals, so we are asking you to select those dates that you think you will be able to send at least one person to. The times are for judging, so ideally you will arrive a little earlier. More details will be given nearer the time.
Carnival Dates
Which events will you be able to send at least one participant to?
Please try to make this a realistic number - we do not want to create lots of flags, costume etc and then have no-one to carry them on the day!

Creative Sessions

Shademakers UK are a leading carnival arts organisations with years of experience working with both professional artists and community groups. They will be helping us to design the overall entry and will be running a series of workshops beginning in April, to create different elements of the carnival entry. You do NOT need any particular skills, just a willingness to have a go and follow some basic instructions. Materials and tuition will be provided by the Shademakers team. Each part of the entry will have its own identity eg using the colours of your branding. We suggest you tick at least two of the creative workshops that you intend to take part in. You may send 1-4 people to each session.
Workshops Dates at Department in Ryde
Which workshops will you be able to send at least one participant to? This is provisional and we will send further details.

In-House Workshops

Larger groups, those with young volunteers or those with particular access needs, may prefer to have Shademakers run a workshop at their premises. Please tick the box if you would like to investigate this option.
In-House Workshops
Please tick to let us know why you would like a set of in-house workshops
Max. file size: 512 MB.

Further Information

More details about the workshops at Department will be sent out in April. Sharon George or another member of the Shademakers team will be in touch with those who are interested in in-house workshops. We may have to limit these, so please get your booking form in as soon as possible. Please contact Sandy Ciccognani if you have any other queries - sciccognani@actioniw.org.uk
