How can I sponsor someone coming to the UK from Ukraine or someone already living on the Isle of Wight?
We would love to hear from you if you have a spare room or other type of accommodation where you can offer a Ukrainian a place to live. See the section on our website ‘How to Host’
More information can be found here:
Will I get paid to host a Ukrainian family? Am I taxed on the payments?
As a part of the Homes for Ukraine scheme, the Government will pay you £350, with a local top up of £150 per month, from the date of arrival at your home, currently to 31 March 2026. There only one payment per month, regardless of the number of people or the number of properties you are hosting. The payment is tax free.

Can I charge rent whilst receiving my ‘thank you’ payments?
You cannot charge your guests rent if you want to claim the ‘thank you’ payment. However, you can ask them for a fair and reasonable contribution towards your bills.
Will my house insurance be affected?
Insurers have agreed that for homeowners accommodating people coming from Ukraine in their home, there is no need to contact your insurer on the basis that they are accommodated as non-paying guests. In other situations, including where the sponsor is a landlord or a tenant, you will need to contact your insurer. If you have a mortgage on the property you will need to refer to the lender’s website for more instructions.

What happens when I have hosted for the minimum of 6 months?
Although the minimum hosting period is 6 months, we do hope that you will wish to extend that period. However, this is by no means obligatory as we understand that circumstances change and people need to move on. We can discuss the next steps in helping your guest to find alternative accommodation. However, we do ask that you give as much notice as possible, ideally 2 months or more.

Can I sponsor a Ukrainian who is under 18?
There are certain rules around the sponsorship of children. Guidance can be found here:
Our team is here to support you and your guest for as long as you need us. We will discuss all possibilities with you to resolve the situation and if needed, will assist with looking for alternative accommodation for your guest. We are here for the well-being of both host and guest and have your best interests at heart.
Can I sponsor a Ukrainian who is a close family member?
If you are British, Irish or have indefinite leave to remain in the UK, you can be the sponsor for your relatives under the Homes for Ukraine Scheme. However, you may not be eligible for the ‘thank you’ payment.
If you have a Ukraine visa, you can be the sponsor for your children aged 18 or under.
Otherwise, you can look for a sponsor for your relatives to come to the UK under the Homes for Ukraine Scheme.
