Current Timetable of Activities

We have a number of regular users of the hall, a wood wind group, band practice, and a sewing class. However, these are not open to the public generally but via the hirers who book it. It is used for regular monthly meetings by the Parish Council and the horticultural society and is used as a polling station for general and local elections.

It can be booked for any event and we have had across the years, children and adults parties, christenings and wakes.

Our biggest regular event is the Village Fare. This is on the first Saturday of every month and is organised by a team of people in the village. We have homemade cakes that are donated, tea and fresh coffee and a stall for selling local produce such as honey eggs, plants, flowers, and preserves and is often themed around Christmas and any special events. The group who organise this sometimes donate takings to the CGCA (we are registered as a charity) or to good causes such as the food bank.

About the Gallybagger:

This is a building that was gifted to the ‘people of Chillerton’ for their leisure and entertainment” in 1933 by the Seely family. It has undergone a recent refurbishment and has a licenced bar, snooker and pool tables, also darts and other games, WiFi and music.

It has a garden which has seating and parasols in fine weather.

The bar is open during Winter on Saturday evenings 7-11pm and Sunday lunchtime 12-3pm. In the Spring and Summer – we are also open on a Friday from 4pm through to 11pm.

We also have a snooker and billiards team who play and practice on Monday and Wednesday evenings during the season. The snooker and pool table is open for use to everyone at other opening times.

The hire arrangement costs are the same as the village hall if it’s booked without the bar, but if an event is booked with the bar – the hire charge is waived.

It is used weekly by a Craft group, Whist group and French group all of which are open to anyone who wishes to attend, usually for a £1 attendance fee to cover either hire costs or refreshments. The bar also serves teas and coffees with sundry biscuits, crisps, sweets and snacks.

We have a monthly quiz night on the second Friday in the month, evenings with live music and events at Halloween, Christmas and New Year and we host barbeques in the summer and some charity events for Macmillan and Antony Nolan bone marrow register.

Folk on Wight hold a regular monthly Folk Night on the last Thursday in the month, 7-11pm open to everybody.

What Are Your Future Plans?

  • We plan to install Wifi later this year (December) when Wightfibre install their Fiber Optic cables in Shalfleet. This will be an added service for our hirers.  It will also allow internet enabled control programming of our heating – helping with energy efficiency. It should attract more hirers for meetings etc.
  • We are looking to install a “Brown Sign” to promote St. Michael’s 11th Century Church and Shalfleet Village Hall.
  • We are investigating a stylised village map.
  • We are exploring our charitable status.
