Sustainability at Community Action Isle of Wight

At Community Action Isle of Wight (CAIW), we work alongside communities, voluntary groups and partners to help the Isle of Wight thrive.

Sustainability is an important part of this work. It means thinking about the long-term impact of what we do, on people, communities and the Island environment, and making responsible choices wherever we can.

By embedding sustainability into how we work, we can reduce our environmental impact, use resources wisely and continue supporting Island communities now and in the future.

To support this commitment, CAIW is taking part in Green Impact IW.

Our Commitment through Green Impact IW

Green Impact IW is a local sustainability programme for Isle of Wight organisations and businesses, delivered through the Isle of Wight Council.

The scheme provides a practical toolkit and framework to help organisations:

  • Improve their environmental performance

  • Take achievable, measurable sustainability actions

  • Engage staff and volunteers in positive change

  • Build sustainability into everyday ways of working

For CAIW, Green Impact IW supports us to turn our values into action, helping us make steady improvements while learning and improving together as an organisation rooted in the Island community.

Our Sustainability Priorities

Through Green Impact IW, CAIW is focusing on sustainability in ways that reflect our role as a community support organisation.

Energy and Carbon Awareness

We are working to reduce unnecessary energy use and improve efficiency where possible, helping to lower our environmental impact while using resources responsibly.

Waste Reduction and Recycling

We aim to minimise waste, improve recycling and encourage re-use, both within our organisation and in how we run meetings, events and services.

Travel and Ways of Working

We consider how we travel and work, aiming to reduce unnecessary journeys and encourage sustainable options such as remote working and active travel where appropriate.

Responsible Spending

We seek to make thoughtful choices when purchasing goods and services, supporting ethical suppliers and local businesses wherever possible.

Caring for the Island Environment

As an Island-based organisation, we recognise the importance of protecting the local environment and supporting actions that help nature and biodiversity.

People, Wellbeing and Inclusion

Sustainability is also about people. Supporting staff wellbeing, inclusion and positive social impact is central to CAIW’s values and to long-term sustainability.

Learning, Tools and Support

Green Impact IW provides a practical toolkit designed specifically for Isle of Wight organisations. This includes:

  • Clear sustainability actions and guidance

  • Practical tools and templates

  • Support to review progress and share good practice

These resources help CAIW take a structured and realistic approach to sustainability, focusing on actions that are achievable and relevant to our work and the communities we support.

Get Involved

Creating a more sustainable organisation is something we do together.

If you work with, for or alongside CAIW and would like to:

  • Get involved in Green Impact IW activities

  • Share ideas or suggestions for improving sustainability

  • Learn more about what we are doing

We would love to hear from you. Small actions, taken collectively, can make a meaningful difference.
