Optio Driver receives Award

Chris Cates received the runner’s up prize for the Age-friendly Volunteer Award from AgeUK IW for his ongoing contribution to the Optio Voluntary Car Service.

When asked what motivated him to do this volunteering he said,
“I had left my last job early at 64 through work related stress and was looking for something to occupy my days. As I had worked in management in the leisure industry all my life (Holiday Parks, Butlins, Pubs, Hotels, Bowing Centres and also as an entertainer) then I was looking for something that was people based and as I love driving I applied. I have not looked back since. It was in 2012 that I was asked if I would be interested in becoming a co-ordinator and of course I said yes. What I enjoy is being able to help people who need assistance and to make their lives a little easier. Most of the clients become friends which is very rewarding and I would encourage anyone who has some spare time on their hands to help others as I do. At the end of the day you feel good in yourself for being able to help others.”
